Matthew 12.

Somehow, I missed my reading on Friday. Probably because I wasn’t working and ran a lot of errands.

While there’s a lot to choose from in this chapter, this saying of Jesus at the end of the chapter cries for attention.

47  Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside wanting to speak to you.”48 To the one who had said this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” 49 And pointing toward his disciples he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Matthew 12:47-50

When I have read this in the past, I have focused on the brothers. Well, the brothers were not yet believers so Jesus seemed to be making a point of relationship with him means doing God’s will. This time as I was reading I paid more attention to the fact that Mary was included. Mary? Surely she believed. I’m pretty certain she did.

Upon reflection, I think Jesus’ point is still the same. Doing the Father’s will is how we establish the closest relationship with him. And I would reverse this idea, too. When we are in close relationship with Jesus, we want to and will do the Father’s will.
