Matthew 11.

In this chapter we learn of John’s doubts. “Are you the one who is to come?” This question from the man who said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Many have wrestled with this incident. Especially since John sends them after hearing about Jesus’ deeds. Some have said that John did it for his disciples’ sake, to prepare them for joining Jesus. Others that this was because Jesus’ deeds were not those of expected warrior who would free Israel from Rome’s domination. Most believe that it was the state of mind that sitting in a prison for some time would lead you to.

What is true is that in this moment he went right to the source, Jesus. Ask Jesus to give me some reassurance in my moment of doubt. That is surely one lesson for us.

I also want to say that I particularly like this statement from Jesus:  “But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

What did you find of value in today’s chapter?

  1. Matthew 11:29 says “Take my yoke upon you…” Years ago, a funny word picture came to me. Whenever I think of that verse, the picture comes to mind. I picture myself as a rebellious ox who is fighting the yoke. I squirm around and refuse to cooperate, so the yoke is poking me in the neck. I twist and turn and now the yoke jabs me in the side. I lie down and am in an uncomfortable, contorted position. My yoke is heavy. It is hurting me. I am not making a bit of progress. I am frustrated. I’m getting worn out fighting the yoke. No work is getting done. How much better to follow Matthew 11:29 and take Jesus’ yoke upon me and learn from him.
