Many events to comment on in Mark 6. This post is for that purpose.
I would like to point to another Markan sandwich, in verses 6b through 30. Here we have the bread (pita?) of the story of the disciples sent out on mission, containing the “meat” (hummus?) of the sandwich, the martyrdom of John the baptizer. If the meat of the sandwich is a key to interpreting the bread, then what does the beheading of John tell us about the disciples’ mission?
What’s on your mind today?
January is a tough month for me. It’s the anniversary month of several major tragedies among my family and close friends. As I read about John the Baptist’s death, I thought about how sad Jesus must’ve been to hear about John’s death. I thought about how Jesus knows what it’s like to grieve and he understands what we’re going through.
Thanks for your open sharing. If we look at all of his time on earth, Jesus faced many sorrows.
I’ve been following along since we started last week.
I read through Mark 6 with my father in law this morning (who is on hospice). It was such a precious time as we saw and talked about so many examples of Jesus caring for others. Caring for his closest friends upon returning from their mission, feeding of the five thousand and calming of the waves when he walks on water toward them (the disciples).
This all reminded us of how compassionate our Savior is and how incredibly faithful He will continue to be in our lives. Even though that looks different for each of us.
This is so sweet. I’m grateful that you had this time together. The gospel as told by Mark packs so much into a small amount of space and allows us to experience Jesus so easily.
