Many have taught about the undercurrent in the story of the “Good Samaritan”. The legal expert and any others of similar rank, including Pharisees, would get hooked by the story as the priest and the Levite cross the road to avoid anything to do with the injured traveler. It may well be that they are expecting a Pharisee to be the hero who comes to the aid of the traveler. Bam. It’s a hated Samaritan. The legal expert is being chastised by Jesus for even asking the question — who is my neighbor — attempting to limit his responsibility.
