In simple terms, chapter five is about Jesus as a better high priest. In the order of Melchizedek. You can read about Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18-20 and Psalm 110. He’s a mysterious figure and seen as a “type” of Christ.
While verses seven through ten are a block that belong together, I was struck particularly by verse seven.
7 During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.
Hebrews 5:7 NET
This is a surprising statement. What is the writer talking about when he says, “requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears”? I had to stop and consider this. The writer must be talking about Jesus’ prayers in the garden of Gethsemane. How amazing that this is well enough known that it could be referenced in this letter.
The other impact of this entire block is how it contrasts with Melchizedek. Melchizedek is a mysterious figure, almost mystical. Jesus is historical and “fleshy”, as captured in the phrase, “during his earthly life”, which is literally “in the days of his flesh.” We might speculate about Melchizedek, but not about Jesus.
